Small African Baule Chair
$ 149.99
An original wooden Baule chair from ivory coast, hand-carved and assembled.
The chairs of the Djimini & Baule tribes of the Ivory Coast have a typical design, low with a vertical back. Traditionally reserved for members of the Poro (secret men’s) society, these chairs are offered by wives or female relatives to men after initiation. The austere rigidity of the chair’s straight back was a sign of their new social standing and dignity.
